Kale in the Snow

kaleThere was a time (years ago) when I was a bit of a folk singer.  And a song that I sang at every performance was “The Dutchman” written by Mike Smith.  It’s about an old couple and their relationship.  And there is a line in that song that goes:

“He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow.

He’s mad as he can be but Margaret only sees that sometimes.

Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his eyes.”

That line always got to me.

I couldn’t help thinking of that song the other day as I harvested some kale in the snow.  And I wondered once more, as that song has caused me to wonder many times, if the tulips really do bloom beneath the snow.
