How to Start a “Rooted in the Infinite” Study Group

It’s also for the wonderful participants of the YOFA jhe Experiment.  Some of you got truly outrageous results.   So, first of all, let me acknowledge you for receiving in such a profound way.  (You can see the results here:  http://www.yofa.net/jhe/results.htm )

Many of you who felt so deeply shifted from the jhe sessions have written to me asking how you can continue this on your own.  This post is for you.  Having a study group will help you do it.   

So before we look at how to start a group, let’s see if working with the book is something you would want to do.

Why would you want to study "Rooted in the Infinite"?

  • To begin or deepen your meditation practice
  • To cultivate inner peace, wisdom, and unconditional love.
  • To bring greater authenticity to your relationships.
  • To align with prosperity.
  • To have greater awareness of now

Why would you start a "Rooted" Study Group?

1 – Conversation

When you say things out loud, and hear them from others, and exchange about them, they become networked into your awareness more easily.  Law of Attraction brings you more insights, associations, and expansion.

It soothes the soul to exchange energy with others who are vibrating in harmony with your chosen direction.

3 – Consistency

With so many divergent forces tugging at your attention, setting a time with others makes you more accountable to the intention you have set.  The consistency that results deepens the process and multiplies its benefits.

  • Old friends you’ve been out of touch with for years
  • Your siblings
  • Your adult children
  • Your co-workers
  • Your spiritual center

  • The place where you take classes in what you love to do (dancing, painting, yoga, knitting, martial arts, drumming, tennis, skiing, etc.)

How to structure it? 

Think of it like making "Root" Soup.

1st Part — Social – (Assemble the Ingredients)

  • Get to know each other where you now are in your lives.  Share.  Be sure to include the YOFA listening practice from the moment the group begins.   See page xxv of the Introduction.  The listening practice is based on the two agreements described there.  You can download the Introduction here: http://RootedintheInfinite.com

2nd Part — Conversation – (Stir)

  • Choose one chapter per meeting and discuss it.  Read it before the meeting.  Don’t focus so much on what I say n the book, but what it awakens in you.

3rd Part — Practice – (Add Heat)

  • Bring your cushions and maybe a timer. Do the exercises. Either take turns reading or have someone record them so you can all do them together.  I’ll have recordings in my voice for you eventually.

4th Part — Enjoy – (Feel Fed, Nourished, and Satisfied by your Soup)

  • Share your experience.  Look at each other after practice.  See the alignment coming into view in the face, posture, smile, and heart of each group member.  If you are on the phone, hear it in the voice.  If you are online, feel it in the presence of the other.  Acknowledge each other’s beauty.  Say what you love about each other.

Yes, I’ve renamed "health" and "healing." 

Kind of bold, I know.

If you’ve got the book Rooted in the Infinite you can jump to Chapter 16 for the full explanation. 

I’ve set in motion a new word: jhe.  It’s short for "joyful harmonious expressiveness."  So if you hear me talking about "jhe," you’ll know what it’s all about.

As you might imagine, I like to look at jhe as a function of alignment – both physical and energetic alignment.  And when your jhe is flowing, others would say you are healing.

The Thanksgiving jhe Experiment (and Gift)

Meditation and Intelligence

By quieting the mind and bringing it to a state of wholeness, the mind reveals its deep intelligence.

Spiritual culture often depicts the mind as the bad guy.  We often recognize the mind as the source of our disconnection and the instrument that scatters and shatters our sense of well-being.  In meditation, we move toward a quiet and disengaged mind.  The Yoga Sutras tell us right upfront that our mission is to "unthink."  Swami Satchidananda translates verse two of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras this way:  "The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga."

And yet, we think as naturally as we breathe.  We think incessantly.  So, how do we go from automatic thinking to no thinking? 

It helps to have a ramp.  It helps to have a system that allows the mind to think, and yet, by its thinking, it leads to no thinking. Or more integrated thinking.  Or more "whole" thinking.

Rather than screeching on the brakes and crashing into your thoughts at high speed, it helps to have a way to gradually and naturally decelerate your thoughts so that you glide into higher states of awareness in mediation.

By approaching the mind in a nonresistant mood, we immediately dissolve one of its biggest obstacles.  In fact, it is the mind that has decided that the mind is a problem!

Here are three steps you can take to begin the process of preparation for mediation. With this approach, you achieve greater wisdom and more precise intelligence.  As you honor your mind and treat it with love and respect, it reveals its true brilliance.

Step One

Recognize that you are your world.  The Upanishads urge us to recognize all beings in the self and the self in all beings.  Contemplate this notion as you interact with your neighbors and your family.   Take on this challenge as you read the newspaper or when you consider your political leaders.  This practice dissolves blame.  Blame feeds the conflicted mind.  The less the mind has to blame, the more peaceful the mind becomes.  As the mind becomes an instrument of peace, so does your world.

Step Two

Speak your truth.  This is not to be confused with reporting about conditions.  Just because something terrible may have happened, it is not necessarily your truth to speak about it.  Your truth can be found in words that feel like nectar as they flow from your lips.  They soothe a difficult situation. They uplift you and others.  You can recognize their truth because everyone within earshot feels better from having heard them.  These are words of truth.

Step Three

Know when to keep silent.  If speaking something that seems to be your truth will cause harm or injury to yourself or another, that is the time to remain quiet.  Step two (speak your truth) does not command you to go around telling everyone everything you don’t like about them.  Knowing when to hold your tongue (and enjoying the deliberate silence) is a cause and an effect of wisdom.

By approaching the mind with honor, friendship, and respect, we bring its chaotic and conflicted waves of activity into a harmonious and beneficial hum.  I like to call this song of the mind "meditative intelligence."

Touching the Mirror

Icecream  Here’s what we usually do. 

We hold an ice cream cone in our left hand in front of a mirror.  We see the ice cream cone and reach toward the mirror with our right hand.  We press and push on the mirror, trying to get the yummy treat.

We find we cannot extract ice cream from the mirror.

We get angry and depressed.

The Turning Point

At the moment that we realize that the thing we want does not live in the mirror, we wake up to our true power.   

We realize that what we are reaching for is in our other hand.  We are already in possession of the thing we seek.

That is the moment of transformation.

The way to access the ice cream cone is by looking within. 

Once you realize that the outer world offers only a reflection of your potential, you become empowered. Once you are empowered to find your true talent, value, and magnificence, life becomes a very satisfying journey.

Meditation and Sandwiches

Infoc2_1 You know how you can put just about anything between two pieces of bread and we call it a sandwich? 

If you go into a restaurant and just order a sandwich, who knows what you might get?

Meditation is like that, too. 

Do anything with just a little added awareness and we’ll call it meditation.  The term is so broad that buying a meditation book or going to a meditation class or deciding you are going to start meditating is like deciding you are going to eat a sandwich.  You still have no idea just what experience you are about to taste.

You can span the range from elaborate guided imagery to Zen sitting practice and one thing will remain constant.  It’s like the bread.  That one thing is you; it is the state you bring to your sandwich, I mean meditation.

A Different Kind of Yoga

"The Yoga of Alignment" is a phrase that came to me years ago in meditation.  Ever since then, that’s what I have been calling my work.  I also use its nickname YOFA (Y of A) 

And yet, if you come to a YOFA workshop, it looks nothing like a yoga class.  And if you buy my new book with this same subtitle, I must warn you, it reads nothing like a yoga book. 

So, before you go and buy the book, let me tell you what it is not:

It is not a book on hatha yoga.  There are no physical postures except for sitting to meditate.
